Suite à l’annonce du Vatican au sujet du programme de la visite papale au Canada jeudi dernier, 23 juin 2022, la conférence des évêques catholiques du Canada ont publié un communiqué de presse que vous pouvez lire ici-bas :

« Les évêques catholiques du Canada accueillent le dévoilement de la programmation de la visite papale au Canada - 24 au 29 juillet 2022

Le 23 juin 2022 - Les évêques catholiques du Canada accueillent favorablement l'annonce faite aujourd'hui par le Saint-Siège, qui présente plus en détail l'itinéraire de la visite historique du pape François au Canada, du 24 au 29 juillet 2022. Il s'agira de la quatrième visite papale au Canada et de la première depuis le voyage de saint Jean-Paul II en 2002.

Le pèlerinage du Saint-Père sera axé sur la guérison et la réconciliation avec les peuples autochtones, tout en offrant au pasteur des 1,2 milliard de catholiques dans le monde l'occasion de rencontrer les fidèles au Canada. En raison de son âge avancé et de ses limitations, on s'attend à ce que la participation du pape François aux événements publics soit limitée à environ une heure.

Le coordonnateur général de la visite papale au Canada, Mgr Richard Smith, a commenté la publication de la programmation : « Nous savons que le Saint-Père a été profondément touché par sa rencontre avec les peuples autochtones à Rome plus tôt cette année, et qu'il espère poursuivre l'important dialogue qui a eu lieu. Nous prions pour que ce pèlerinage soit une nouvelle étape significative dans le long processus de guérison, de réconciliation et d'espoir. »

La visite, qui a pour thème "Marcher ensemble", comprendra plusieurs événements publics et privés, l'accent étant mis sur la participation des Autochtones tout au long de la visite. Les billets (gratuits) pour participer aux événements publics seront disponibles dans les prochains jours. Un portail pour s'inscrire comme bénévole est déjà accessible sur visitepapale.ca ou papalvisit.ca, pour ceux et celles qui souhaitent partager leur temps et leurs talents dans le cadre de cette visite historique.

L'équipe qui organise la visite papale travaillera en étroite collaboration avec les partenaires autochtones ainsi qu'avec les gouvernements fédéral, provinciaux et municipaux afin de dialoguer et de coordonner les importants défis logistiques associés à une visite de cette envergure. Le président de la Conférence des évêques catholiques du Canada, Mgr Raymond Poisson, a commenté ces efforts : « Tant de gens travaillent avec diligence pour organiser ce programme très rempli pour le Saint-Père et les participants. Nous prions pour la santé du pape François et aussi pour que sa visite pastorale au Canada apporte réconciliation et espoir à tous ceux et celles qui accompagneront notre pasteur dans ce voyage historique.

24 juillet 2022

Le Saint-Père arrivera à Edmonton, en Alberta, le 24 juillet. Après une brève cérémonie à l'aéroport, le pontife de 85 ans prendra le reste de la journée pour se reposer.

25 juillet 2022

Le 25 juillet, le pape François visitera Maskwacis, où se trouve l'ancien pensionnat Ermineskin, l'un des plus grands sites de pensionnat au Canada. Le Saint-Père se joindra à des anciens pensionnaires autochtones de tout le pays dans le cadre d'une activité qui leur sera consacrée. L'Alberta compte le plus grand nombre d'anciens pensionnats au Canada.

Plus tard dans la journée, le pontife se rendra à l'église Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples, une église autochtone nationale située au centre-ville d'Edmonton. Après plusieurs années de restauration à la suite d'un incendie dévastateur, la paroisse rouvrira ses portes après avoir utilisé une école voisine ces dernières années pour offrir l'hébergement, des soins spirituels et des programmes de soutien à une communauté autochtone urbaine diversifiée. Il s'agit d'un événement sur invitation seulement.

26 juillet 2022

Le 26 juillet est la fête de sainte Anne, grand-mère de Jésus, un jour de recueillement particulier pour les catholiques autochtones et souvent l'occasion de pèlerinages dans diverses régions du pays. Lors d'un événement ouvert au grand public, le Saint-Père célébrera une messe en plein air au Commonwealth Stadium d'Edmonton. Ce site peut accueillir jusqu'à 65 000 personnes pour ce rassemblement qui intégrera des traditions autochtones.

En début de soirée, le Saint-Père se rendra au lac Sainte-Anne, site d'un pèlerinage annuel qui accueille chaque année des dizaines de milliers de participants autochtones venus de tout le Canada et des États-Unis. Des activités seront proposées tout au long de la journée, jusqu'à la participation du Saint-Père à un temps de prière.

27 juillet 2022

Le Saint-Père quittera Edmonton pour se rendre à Québec. À son arrivée, le Pontife visitera la Citadelle, où il prendra part à des rencontres privées. Le pape François, à la fois chef spirituel et chef d'État, prononcera également une allocution publique. Les 27 et 28 juillet, le grand public pourra se rassembler sur les plaines d'Abraham. Ce site deviendra pour l'occasion un carrefour axé sur la rencontre, qui mettra notamment à l'honneur des manifestations culturelles autochtones. Des écrans géants permettront aussi de regarder en direct les événements auxquels participera le Pape. Le programme détaillé des activités sur les Plaines est en cours d'élaboration avec des partenaires autochtones et locaux.

28 juillet 2022

Le pape François se rendra à Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, où il célébrera la messe sur l'un des sites de pèlerinage les plus anciens et les plus populaires d'Amérique du Nord, qui attire chaque année plus d'un million de visiteurs (y compris des pèlerinages autochtones annuels). Les organisateurs prévoient qu'entre 10 000 et 15 000 personnes pourront assister à la messe et qu'il y aura de l'espace pour les invités à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur de la basilique.

Plus tard dans la journée, le Saint-Père rencontrera des évêques, des prêtres, des séminaristes, des hommes et femmes consacrés, de même que même que des collaborateurs et collaboratrices laïques à la mission de l’Église, comme il le fait lors de la plupart des visites papales. Le Pape disposera du reste de la soirée pour se reposer tandis qu'un souper axé sur l'amitié et le dialogue en cours réunira des leaders autochtones de l'Est du Canada et des représentants des évêques catholiques du Canada.

29 juillet 2022

Après une rencontre privée avec des membres de sa propre congrégation religieuse (la Compagnie de Jésus), le pape François rencontrera des leaders autochtones de l’Est du pays, avant de quitter pour Iqaluit, où il passera l'après-midi. Celui-ci sera dédié à une rencontre privée avec des survivants et survivantes des pensionnats et à un événement communautaire public organisé par la communauté inuit.

Le Saint-Père quittera Iqaluit pour Rome en début de soirée.

Following the announcement of the Vatican regarding the Program of the Papal Visit to Canada last Thursday, June 23rd, 2022, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops published a media release which you can read below :

“Catholic Bishops Welcome Announcement of Program for Papal Visit to Canada – July 24 – 29, 2022

June 23, 2022 – Canada’s Catholic Bishops welcome today’s announcement from the Holy See providing further details of the itinerary of Pope Francis’ historic visit to Canada, July 24 – 29, 2022. This will be the fourth papal visit to Canada and the first since Saint John Paul II’s journey in 2002.

The Holy Father’s pilgrimage will focus on Indigenous healing and reconciliation while also providing the shepherd of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics an opportunity to encounter the faithful in Canada. Due to his advanced age and limitations, it is expected that participation by Pope Francis at public events will be limited to approximately one hour.

General Co-ordinator of the Papal Visit to Canada, Archbishop Richard Smith, remarked on the release of the program: “We know that the Holy Father was deeply moved by his encounter with Indigenous Peoples in Rome earlier this year, and that he hopes to build on the important dialogue that took place. We pray this pilgrimage will serve as another meaningful step in the long journey of healing, reconciliation and hope.”

The visit, drawing on the theme of “Walking Together”, will include a combination of public and private events, with an emphasis on Indigenous participation throughout the visit. Ticketing (free) for public events will be announced in the coming days. A volunteer portal can be accessed at papalvisit.ca or visitepapale.ca for those wishing to share their time and talents as part of the historic visit.

The papal visit planning team will work closely with Indigenous partners as well as federal, provincial and municipal levels of government to dialogue and co-ordinate the significant logistical challenges associated with a visit of this scope and magnitude. Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops President, Bishop Raymond Poisson, commented on the efforts: “So many people are working diligently to organize this very busy schedule for the Holy Father and participants. We pray for the health of Pope Francis and also that his pastoral visit to Canada will bring reconciliation and hope to all those who will accompany our shepherd on this historic journey.”

July 24, 2022

The Holy Father will arrive in Edmonton, Alberta on July 24th. Following a brief airport ceremony, the 85-year-old pontiff will take the remainder of the day to rest.

July 25, 2022

On July 25th, Pope Francis will visit Maskwacis, home to the former Ermineskin Residential School, one of the largest residential school sites in Canada. The Holy Father will join former residential school students from across the country as part of a formal program. Alberta is home to the largest number of former residential schools in Canada.

Later in the day, the pontiff will visit Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples, a National Indigenous church in downtown Edmonton. Following extensive restoration after a devastating fire in 2020, the parish will re-open its doors after using a nearby school the last several years to offer hospitality, spiritual care and supportive outreach programs serving a diverse urban Indigenous community. This will be an invitation-only event.

July 26, 2022

July 26th is the feast of St. Anne, grandmother of Jesus, a day of particular reverence for Indigenous Catholics and often the focus of pilgrimage in various parts of the country. In an event that will be open to the public, the Holy Father will celebrate an open-air Mass at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. The facility can accommodate up to 65,000 attendees for a program that will incorporate Indigenous traditions as part of the gathering.

In the early evening, the Holy Father will travel to Lac Ste. Anne, the site of an annual pilgrimage that welcomes tens of thousands of Indigenous participants from throughout Canada and the United States each year. Programming will be offered throughout the day leading up to the Holy Father’s participation in a prayer service.

July 27, 2022

The Holy Father will depart Edmonton for Quebec City. Upon arrival, the Pontiff will visit La Citadelle, where he will take part in private meetings. Pope Francis, as both a spiritual leader and head of state, will also offer a public address. For events in Quebec City, the public is also invited to participate at a dedicated area on the Plains of Abraham, where there will be opportunities on July 27 and 28 for Indigenous cultural expression as well as the chance to view papal events on large screens. The detailed program of activities on the Plains is being developed with Indigenous and community partners.

July 28, 2022

Pope Francis will travel to Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, where he will celebrate Mass at one of the oldest and most popular pilgrimage sites in North America, drawing more than a million visitors to the site (including annual Indigenous pilgrimages) each year. Organizers anticipate between 10,000 and 15,000 guests may attend with space for guests both inside and outside the basilica.

Later in the day, His Holiness will meet with bishops, priests, seminarians, consecrated men and women as well as those who work in various church ministries, as is customary with most papal visits. The pope will have the remainder of the evening for rest while a dinner focused on friendship and ongoing dialogue will bring together Indigenous leaders from Eastern Canada and representatives of the Catholic Bishops of Canada.

July 29, 2022

Following a private meeting with members of his own religious order (Society of Jesus), Pope Francis will meet with Indigenous leaders from Eastern Canada before departing for Iqaluit, where he will spend the afternoon in a private meeting with residential school survivors before attending a public community event hosted by Inuit.

The Holy Father will depart for Rome from Iqaluit in the early evening.
