Diocese Newsletter - December 8, 2020

From the Bishop's Office

Pope Francis today publishes the Apostolic Letter Patris Corde (With a Father's Heart) on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the proclamation of Saint Joseph as Patron Saint of the Universal Church. It also decrees a “special year of Saint Joseph” from December 8, 2020 to December 8, 2021.

A beloved father. A father in tenderness, in obedience and in welcome. A father with creative courage. A worker. Always in the shadows. It is with these words, imbued with tenderness, that Pope Francis describes Saint Joseph in the Apostolic Letter Patris Corde, published on Tuesday 8 December on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the proclamation of the Bridegroom of the Virgin Mary as Patron Saint of the Universal Church. It is in fact by the decree “Quemadmodum Deus”, signed on December 8, 1870, that Blessed Pius IX wanted this title to be attributed to Saint Joseph. To celebrate this anniversary, the Sovereign Pontiff decrees a special Year dedicated to the putative father of Jesus.
The Pope writes, “The Covid-19 pandemic makes us understand the importance of ordinary people, those who, away from the spotlight, show patience, instill hope and ensure that real co-responsibility is created. Like Saint Joseph, "the man who goes unnoticed, the man of daily presence, discreet and hidden", and who, however, "plays an unparalleled role in the history of salvation".”

Plenary indulgence for the "Year of Saint Joseph"
The Apostolic Letter Patris Corde is accompanied by a decree from the Apostolic Penitentiary announcing the "Special Year of Saint Joseph" decreed by the Pope and the relative concession of the "gift of special indulgences".

You can download the Apostolic Letter for your reading pleasure and the link to the Apostolic Letter will also be available on our Facebook Page.

“In this “Year of Saint Joseph”, let us keep in our prayers the les Religieuses Hospitalières de Saint-Joseph sisters, who like their patron saint, are always listening to the Lord and continue to be among us; his most faithful workers. May you have a Happy Saint Joseph Year »
