"An Extraordinary Jubilee Year dedicated to living out in our daily lives the mercy which the Father constantly extends to all of us. In this Jubilee Year, let us allow God to surprise us. He never tires of casting open the doors of his heart and of repeating that he loves us and wants to share his love with us."
(Excerpt from Pope Francis' Bull of Indiction for the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy)

The Holy Year of Mercy will begin on December 8th, 2015Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary and end on November 20th, 2016Feast of Christ the King of the Universe
This is the first Holy Year to celebrate not an anniversary of some kind, but rather The Mercy of God the Father, attribute most exalted in both the Old and the New Testaments.

Brothers and Sisters in Faith,
Salutations, Peace and Joy! On the occasion of the Fiftieth anniversary of the closure of the Second Vatican Council, an event that profoundly marked our Church during the last century, and on this Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, Pope Francis has decreed a Holy Year of Mercy. Inaugurated this very day, the Holy Year of Mercy will continue until the Feast of Christ the King of the Universe on the twentieth of November 2016.
May we enter with fervour into this extraordinary celebration Jubilee, which is an occasion to pass through the doors of Mercy and taste anew the Joy of a personal and communal encounter with the Risen Christ.
May the activities we are about to live during this Holy Year permit us to be nourished abundantly by the Word of God, to rediscover the immensity of His love and to profess our faith with a renewed conviction.
May this time of Grace fortify us and may we be witness to God’s Mercy which we are called to extend to all those in search of Him in this sometime agitated world of ours.
May the acts of Mercy accomplished during this Jubilee Year bring about greater peace, indulgence and charity to our society. May this Year of Mercy empower the church to have the courage to go to the peripheries of our world in profound change.
In communion with Pope Francis and the Whole Church, from this, the Cathedral church of the Sacred Heart, I Daniel Jodoin, your brother and your Bishop, declare begun the Holy Year of Mercy 2015-2016 in our Diocese.
Fraternally yours in affections of Faith.
+ Daniel Jodoin
Bishop of Bathurst
Given this 8th day of December in the Year of Grace 2015

The solemn inauguration of the Holy Year will be marked by the opening of the Holy Door of Saint Peter’s Basilica on December 8th.

After the inauguration, all the particular Churches (Dioceses) will be invited to open their own Doors of Mercy in communion with the Church of Rome by a celebration during the Third Sunday of Advent. These doors, analogous to the Holy Doors of the Papal Basilicas in Rome, will permit those individuals who cannot travel to Rome to make a Jubilee pilgrimage, and this, they may do throughout the entire Holy Year of Mercy.
In his bull of indiction, Misericordiae Vultus, Pope Francis decreed that "in all the dioceses of the world, it will be the responsibility of the local Ordinary to decide in which church of the diocese the Door of Mercy will be opened, and must remain so for the duration of the Holy Year."

Our bishop, His Excellency Bishop Daniel Jodoin, will open the Door of Mercy within our Diocese during a special celebration on December 13th at 3:00pm at the Cathedral-Church of the Sacred Heart in Bathurst. All those interested are invited to attend this celebration as a way to experience the Mercy of God through the active mission of our diocesan Church.
A light lunch will be served in the basement of the Cathedral after the celebration.
